- The European Parliament named Stubb as a candidate for the role of a negotiator on Ukraine
Finnish President Alexander Stubb is being considered as a possible representative of the European Union (EU) in negotiations on a peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine. This was announced by Thierry Mariani, a member of the European Parliament (EP) from France, in an interview with RIA Novosti.
According to him, Stubb, who heads a country with a rich historical experience of interaction with Russia, combines a tough approach with pragmatism and consistently advocates dialogue, recognizing that achieving peace often requires compromise solutions. According to Marian, it is the Finnish experience of building relations with Moscow that can make Stubb a more suitable figure to participate in the negotiation process compared to a number of other European leaders.
At the same time, the MP stressed that in order for Stubb to play a real role in the negotiations, "a strong and unified political mandate from the EU is needed," without which Stubb "will not have the legitimacy and levers of influence necessary for this role."Газета.Ru ".
On January 14, a number of high-ranking EU representatives supported the initiative to create the post of special representative for Ukraine. At the same time, supporters of the proposal believe that the direct participation of the European Union in the negotiations will make it possible to defend key issues for it, including further security guarantees and possible prospects for Ukraine's future membership in NATO.
State Duma deputy Svetlana Zhurova said on the same day that if President Stubb is chosen as the special representative for negotiations on behalf of the European Union with Russia on the Ukrainian issue, he may express an aggressive position towards the Russian Federation. At the same time, the MP noted that Finland is the country that should be the first to restore relations with Russia.
