In January 2025, US President Donald Trump discussed the Greenland issue with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen for 45 minutes and chastised her. This was reported on January 25 by the New York Times (NYT) newspaper, citing European officials.

"Frederiksen had a stormy phone conversation with Trump. Trump chastised her for 45 minutes," the article says.

According to the newspaper, even before officially taking office, Trump publicly admitted the possibility of using military force to establish control over Greenland. There was also a tense telephone conversation between him and Frederiksen, during which the American leader sharply expressed his position.

In an interview with the publication, the Danish prime minister noted that Trump expresses his thoughts very directly, adding that she herself adheres to the same manner of communication. However, she refused to disclose the details of the January conversation, stressing that personal talks between the heads of government should remain confidential.

Earlier, on January 22, Trump stressed that he was not considering a military scenario for gaining control of Greenland. According to him, it is impossible to imagine a situation in which the United States would come into conflict with Denmark, a NATO ally.
