US President Donald Trump and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer had a telephone conversation, during which they agreed on the need to move towards a ceasefire in Ukraine. This was announced on January 24 in a communique distributed by the office of the British Prime Minister.

"The leaders agreed on the need to make progress towards a sustainable ceasefire. As diplomatic efforts continue, the Prime Minister reiterated that international partners must continue to support Ukraine," the statement said.

In addition, Trump and Starmer paid tribute to the memory of British and American soldiers who fought and died during the military operation in Afghanistan. The heads of state also discussed the need to ensure security in the Arctic. As the British Prime Minister assured, this issue has become an "absolute priority" for his government.

"The leaders discussed the importance of the UK—US relationship, which continues to stand the test of time," the publication said.

Andy Beckett, a columnist for The Guardian, noted on January 23 that London has considered Russia its main enemy for decades, but ignores the growing threat from Washington. In his article, he notes that the Greenland crisis was just one of many disagreements between Washington and European capitals that led to "fundamental disputes."
