- NATO has indicated plans to strengthen its military presence on the border with Russia and Belarus.
NATO plans to create an "automated zone" with robots, drones, sensors and a reinforced military presence on the border with Russia and Belarus. This was announced on January 24 by the Deputy Chief of Staff of the North Atlantic Land Forces, General Thomas Lovin.
"The main idea is to create a complex, multi—level defense system along the border with Russia and Belarus, and not only conventional troops should be used for defense, but also to create a robotic or automated zone near the border," Lovin said in an interview with Welt.
According to him, NATO has been working closely with the Baltic states on this issue, which have already begun building a defense line against Russia in 2024. The general also stressed that the initial elements of the concept are currently being tested "in certain areas, including in partner countries on the eastern flank."
"Some systems have already been deployed and are operational, while others are nearing completion. This includes the installation of a system of sensors and actuators integrated into a large digital network to create an automated zone. This also includes the pre—deployment of equipment, the deployment of troops on site, and the establishment of a command and control system that links national and NATO forces," Lovin stressed.
Earlier, on January 12, the Ministry of Defense of Belarus reported that 16 sorties of NATO member countries carrying out reconnaissance had been recorded in the republic. According to the agency, during 2025, the intensity of reconnaissance of NATO member countries on some days reached 10-12 sorties.
On December 20, 2025, the State Secretary of the Security Council of Belarus, Alexander Volfovich, noted that the events taking place in the West have a significant impact on the security and functioning of all states. He stressed that the situation around the republic continues to be extremely tense.
