The Telegram and WhatsApp messengers (owned by Meta, a company recognized as extremist in Russia) were restricted due to their unwillingness to work according to Russian laws. This was announced on January 24 by State Duma Deputy Sergei Boyarsky.

"No one is going to turn off WhatsApp or Telegram out of harmfulness, no one is going to slow it down. But they, like guests in any home, must work according to Russian laws. Open an office in Russia and cooperate in the fight against fraud. But neither WhatsApp nor Telegram responded to this," he said in an interview with kp.ru .
