The United States is increasing pressure on Bolivia, seeking recognition from the new authorities of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization and the expulsion of alleged Iranian intelligence officers. This was reported on January 24 by the Reuters news agency, citing sources.

According to the agency, Washington insists that La Paz include the Lebanese Hezbollah movement and the Palestinian Hamas group in the list of terrorist organizations. The relevant requirements, as noted, are transmitted to the Bolivian side in a closed manner through diplomatic channels. In January, representatives of the State Department and American intelligence agencies visited the Bolivian capital to discuss these issues.

Reuters points out that since 2006, the country has been ruled by leftist forces that viewed Iran as a partner in opposing the United States. US officials regard the victory of centrist politician Rodrigo Paz in the second round of the October 2025 presidential election as a "unique chance" to change Bolivia's foreign policy course.

The pressure exerted, according to the agency, fits into a broader US strategy to weaken Iran's position in Latin America. In 2025, Ecuador recognized the IRGC, Hamas and Hezbollah as terrorist structures, and the Argentine authorities gave the same status to the IRGC Al-Quds unit. In addition, the American authorities are considering the possibility of making similar demands to Peru, Chile and Panama.

American leader Donald Trump said on January 22 that the United States is closely monitoring the situation in Iran and is sending significant military forces, including ships, to the region. According to him, Washington warned Tehran about a possible US strike if the executions continued in the country, after which the Iranian authorities canceled them.

Prior to that, Trump noted that Iran needs a new government due to recent protests across the country. In his opinion, the authorities of the republic should "properly" govern the country, while the American leader cited himself as an example.
