Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder warned of the risks of an excessive build-up of weapons and stressed the need to stop the arms race. He wrote about this in an article published on January 23 by the Berliner Zeitung newspaper.

"Escalating military buildup in the nuclear age should not be our path. It is necessary to exclude a return to periodic wars. There is no need for any expansion of military capabilities.
