In Spain, the commission named a deformed rail as the cause of a railway disaster.
The cause of the train disaster in the autonomous community of Andalusia in southern Spain, in which 45 people died, was most likely caused by a deformed rail. The Spanish Railway Accident Investigation Commission (CIAF) came to this conclusion on January 23.
"During the inspection of the Iryo train, notches were found on the surface of the wheels in contact with the rails on the right side of cars 2, 3, 4 and 5. <...> These notches on the wheels and the recorded deformation of the rail correspond to the version that the rail was destroyed," the document says.
