In winter, the skin faces a triple threat: dry air in heated rooms, aggressive weather conditions outside and increased moisture loss during physical exertion. An integrated approach based on understanding the causes of the problem is needed to effectively combat dryness of the face, body, hands and scalp. Irina Maltseva, coach of the Lapino Fitness Country Club, told Izvestia about this on January 26.

According to the expert, the main causes of winter dehydration of the skin are a decrease in the activity of sebaceous glands, the formation of a dense layer of dead cells, deterioration of microcirculation and constant temperature fluctuations. During training, the situation is aggravated by fluid loss with sweat, and visiting pools with chlorinated water additionally dries the skin.

"In everyday life, the key task is to maintain a protective hydrolipidic barrier. To do this, it is important not to use water-based moisturizers before going out into the cold, as water particles can freeze and injure the skin. Instead, a nourishing protective cream with a greasier texture should be applied 30-60 minutes before going out," the trainer advised.

It is necessary to wash with mild, alcohol-free creams, avoid aggressive scrubs and moisten the indoor air with special appliances or simple containers of water.

Special attention should be paid to lips and hands, using hygienic lipstick and nourishing cream, and wearing gloves outside. Do not neglect sunscreens with SPF even in winter, especially when traveling to ski resorts where a cream with a protection factor of 50+ is required.

When preparing for a workout, according to Maltseva's advice, one to two hours before the class, you should drink about 500 ml of water and cleanse your skin of makeup. For outdoor activities, a cream with SPF is required. During the workout itself, it is important to drink water in small portions every 15-20 minutes, and use isotonics for prolonged exertion. Before swimming in the pool, you can apply a thin layer of inert oil, such as coconut oil, to the skin.

"After physical exertion, sweat should be washed off as soon as possible using a mild shower gel. Within 15 minutes after water treatments, when the skin is most susceptible, apply a moisturizer or lotion to the body and face. For hair care after training, it is better to choose a moisturizing shampoo," the specialist shared.

Diet also plays an important role in maintaining healthy skin. It is necessary to limit the consumption of coffee, alcohol and sugar, which contribute to dehydration and collagen damage. Instead, you need to add omega-3 foods to the menu (fatty fish, avocados, nuts, seeds), as well as sources of antioxidant vitamins A, C, and E - bell peppers, citrus fruits, carrots, eggs, and vegetable oils. Fermented milk and pickled foods will help support the intestinal microflora, which is directly related to the skin condition.

Elena Ilchuk, cosmetologist, founder and chief physician of ELEVANS clinic, said on January 5 that in winter, the skin, even if it is initially in a normal state, becomes drier and more sensitive, as it lacks moisture. Ilchuk recalled that temperature fluctuations also affect the vessels of the face, which narrow in the cold and expand in the heat.
