Every year on January 25, Russian military personnel responsible for the accuracy of navigation and navigation safety in the Navy are honored. In 2026, the holiday falls on a Sunday. Read about how this date appeared, why the navigator's profession is considered one of the key ones in the navy, and what traditions have developed over the years of celebration in the Izvestia article.

Navigator's Day of the Russian Navy — 2026: the history of the holiday

The holiday was established by order of the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy, Admiral Felix Gromov, on July 15, 1996. Until that time, Navigator's Day was celebrated twice a year — during the spring and autumn equinoxes on March 20-21 and September 22-23, since it is on these dates that the cardinal directions can be determined without instruments.

However, in 1996, it was decided to postpone the day of celebration in favor of a historically significant date — on January 25, 1701, Peter I signed a decree on the opening of the "School of Mathematical and Navigational Sciences" in Moscow. This educational institution has become Russia's first center for training navigation specialists — future navigators. The training was conducted by the best invited European teachers. It was from this day that the history of navigation service in the Russian Navy began.

The term "navigator" came to Russia from the Dutch language, where "stuurman" literally means "the man at the helm." The formation of the service is inextricably linked with the reforms of Peter the Great, who, when forming a regular fleet, understood that without accurate knowledge of the seas, without the skills of building a route and calculating a course, it is impossible to lead ships to victory.

Already in 1720, the duties of navigators and sub-navigators were fixed in the Naval Charter of the Russian Empire. Battleships were supposed to have from one to two such specialists, depending on the class of the vessel and the number of artillery pieces.

In the XVIII–XIX centuries, the navigation service was actively developing, acquiring a scientific basis. Russian navigators participated in geographical discoveries, hydrographic expeditions, and the compilation of nautical charts and atlases. Their accuracy and methodology have been recognized by the international community. During this period, they often combined the functions of astronomers, cartographers and navigation engineers.

After the revolution of 1917 and during the Civil War, the navigator training system was virtually destroyed. However, already in the 1920s, the restoration of the navigation service began. In 1921, the Higher Maritime School was established in Leningrad, which was later transformed into the Frunze Naval College, where the training of specialist boatmasters was resumed.

During the Great Patriotic War, the role of navigators proved to be critically important. It was on them that the exit of submarines, the setting of minefields, the accuracy of torpedo attacks and artillery attacks depended. These specialists provided naval aviation operations, developed amphibious routes, and participated in evacuations and supplies to besieged Leningrad along the "Road of Life" through Ladoga. Many were awarded orders and medals, and some were awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.

In the post-war period, the navigation service became the basis for high-precision navigation on submarines, nuclear cruisers, rocket and aircraft carriers. Specialized schools were opened in the USSR, and unique educational and navigation complexes were developed. This profession remained one of the most responsible and highly qualified in the navy.

In the 21st century, a navigator is a specialist who knows both traditional methods of navigation and modern digital technologies. He has satellite navigation, sonar systems, and electronic maps at his disposal. His calculations are important not only for the movement of ships and ships, but also for the precise use of weapons.

These specialists ensure the strategic presence of the Russian fleet in the Arctic, the Mediterranean, and the Pacific, participate in long-range voyages, international exercises, and ensure the safety of navigation in coastal waters and inland waterways.

Today, the Russian Navy's navigation service includes more than 10 training units. The departments of ship navigation and navigation operate in the naval universities of St. Petersburg, Sevastopol, Kaliningrad and Vladivostok.

Traditions of celebrating the Day of the Navigator of the Navy

On January 25, solemn formations of personnel are held in all Russian fleets, the command summarizes the results of the year, announces commendations, presents departmental and state awards, and encourages distinguished officers and cadets. On ships at sea, the commanders personally congratulate the navigators on watch, and meetings with veterans and thematic classes are held in coastal units.

Professional skills competitions are also organized on this day. For example, it has become a tradition in the Pacific Fleet to hold competitions on this day between navigators of various ranks, from cadets to officers.

Lectures and open classes on the history of the profession are held at naval academies, navigation departments and specialized schools. Teachers and cadets analyze the current challenges facing the navigation service, share professional findings and best practices. Exhibitions of navigation equipment, demonstrations of simulators and navigation technologies are often organized on the holiday.

Happy Navy Navigator's Day on January 25 — best wishes

Navy Navigator's Day is an occasion to express gratitude to those responsible for the accuracy and safety of maritime navigation, whose knowledge and calculations ensure the daily fulfillment of combat missions. On this day, congratulations are addressed to officers and midshipmen of the navigation service, cadets of specialized universities, teachers of navigation disciplines, as well as veterans who have devoted their lives to the navy. Izvestia has prepared several examples of how this can be done.:

"Congratulations on the Day of the navigator of the Navy! Your service requires daily accurate calculations without the right to make mistakes. May you be accompanied in any latitude by confidence in your decisions, the support of the crew and the respect of the command. We wish you good health, a steady course in life and at sea, as well as well-deserved recognition for your contribution to the security of the country!"

"Congratulations on your professional holiday! Without your skill, no fleet operation is possible. We wish that both in the service and in the civilian life everything was according to your coordinates — clearly, competently and predictably. Let no current lead you astray, and there will always be a new goal beyond the horizon."

"Happy holidays! Being a navigator means being the first to see the route, not being afraid of storms, and making decisions with a cool head. May your inner compass always be attuned to accuracy, strength, and faith in your own decisions, the sea will be your ally, and technology will be your right tool. We wish you accurate calculations, calm watches, a strong team and decent service. Happy Navigator's Day!"

"Congratulations on your professional holiday! May the service give you confidence, and the sea inspire you. Your profession requires a clear mind, endurance and high skill. We wish that there is always enough depth on your path for reflection, sufficient breadth for horizons, and a solid bottom for support. With respect and gratitude, happy Navigator's Day!"

"Congratulations on the Day of the navigator of the Navy! You steer a course not only at sea, but also in life, make decisions in conditions of complete uncertainty, keep your cool under pressure, and are responsible for the entire crew. Let there always be order in the service and in the family, respect and honesty are the main guidelines of a true officer."
