The cause of a severe headache does not always lie in blood vessels or high blood pressure. Sometimes the problem is in the muscle clamps. Nikita Sherstobitov, a neurologist and rehabilitologist, told Izvestia about this on January 23.

According to the specialist, in some cases the headache is musculotonic in nature and is associated with chronic overstrain of soft tissues.

"Very often, the source of pain is not in the head itself, but in the neck, shoulders, and upper thoracic region. Overstrain of the neck and collar area, clavicular and pectoral muscles, as well as loss of elasticity of the fascia can literally "pull" the head, causing severe, exhausting pain," explained Sherstobitov.

Such pains often occur in people with sedentary work, high stress levels and the habit of staying in one position for a long time. At the same time, painkillers have a weak or short-term effect, since they do not affect the root cause.

In such cases, according to the doctor, non—drug correction methods are effective, in particular myofascial release (MFR) - gentle work with muscles and fascia, aimed at relieving tension and restoring tissue mobility.

"MFR helps to "relieve" congested areas, improve blood circulation and reduce pressure on nervous structures. As a result, the intensity of pain decreases and the feeling of lightness in the head returns," the neurologist noted.

Sherstobitov emphasizes that even simple self-help techniques can have a tangible effect. For example, a gentle massage of the collar area using a tennis ball or relaxation of the occipital muscles in the supine position with an emphasis on calm breathing.

At the same time, the specialist reminds that regular headaches are a reason to consult a doctor and undergo an examination, and not just limit themselves to symptomatic treatment.

"If the pain repeats, it's a signal from the body that it's overloaded. Ignoring it means driving the problem deeper," he concluded.

Earlier, on January 9, it was reported that starting in 2026, Russians will undergo medical examinations under the new rules, including screenings for viral hepatitis and HPV. It was noted that for people with limited mobility, the opportunity to undergo an examination at home is organized.
