The European Union (EU) has painfully realized its lack of autonomy in decision—making - its role has turned out to be much less significant than European elites had assumed for many years. Political analyst Ivan Mezyuho told Izvestia about this on January 23.

"Today, in a sense, the EU is starting to fight for its own voice in relations with the United States. But, to be honest, this fight looks sluggish and unconvincing. The EU has brought itself to such a degree of political degradation that it is unlikely to be able to gain its own impressive voice in international affairs within the framework of the so—called Western bloc of powers," the political scientist stressed.

Discussing the reasons why the leaders of European countries refuse to participate in the Peace Council, Mezyuho noted that the European Union does not see its place in this structure.

"The United States points out to the EU its insignificance and inability not only to solve external problems, but also to adequately respond to the internal challenges facing the European Union and the entire alliance of European states," the expert explained.

According to Mezyuho, American leader Donald Trump will leave an indelible mark on relations between the United States and Europe, and now the EU is only at the beginning of "the path of realizing its own worthlessness and lack of independence" within the framework of Washington's foreign policy.

"The Europeans will not forget the humiliations they experienced during Donald Trump's second presidential term," the political scientist concluded.

Earlier in the day, Politico newspaper reported that the EU had "crossed the Rubicon" and would no longer rely on the United States for its security and sovereign agenda. According to the interlocutors of the publication, the informal meeting of the members of the European Council in Brussels was a silent signal of a fateful break with the old order.

At the same time, Philip Pilknington, a columnist for The American Conservative (AC) magazine, noted that the Trump administration publicly humiliates the EU because of the unwillingness of European leaders to enter into negotiations with Russia.
