- The Guardian pointed out that London underestimated the threat from the United States.
London has considered Russia its main enemy for decades, but ignores the growing threat posed by Washington. Andy Beckett, a columnist for The Guardian, also expressed his opinion on January 23.
"Since the end of World War II, according to British security agencies, Russia has usually been considered our most obvious enemy. <...> However, given the increasingly unpredictable <...> presidency of [American leader] Donald Trump, this assumption seems more banal than ever," Beckett writes.
In his article, he notes that the Greenland crisis was just one of many disagreements between Washington and European capitals that led to "fundamental disputes."
Despite the fact that a third of the UK population already considers the United States a threat, it is difficult for the country's leaders to accept the new reality of the decline of the "special" Anglo-American relations.
"Despite [British Prime Minister Keir] Starmer's belated but harsh words on the Greenland issue on Wednesday, in a broader sense, his approach to Trump remains committed to British orthodoxy, according to which there is little to gain from a fundamental break with the United States, but there is much to lose," the article says.
Beckett notes that the reason for this rigidity is not only the belief in the steadfastness of the historical alliance, but also "deep" strategic calculations. After losing global influence in the middle of the 20th century, London has no choice but to "courageously endure the current situation and stall for time."
Earlier in the day, Politico newspaper reported that the EU had "crossed the Rubicon" and would no longer rely on the United States for its security and sovereign agenda. According to the interlocutors of the publication, the informal meeting of the members of the European Council in Brussels was a silent signal of a fateful break with the old order.
Before that, on January 21, Die Welt newspaper stated that Trump's policy towards European countries in his second term was a gift for the Russian side. It was noted that the claims of the American leader to Greenland could provoke the collapse of NATO. The article also mentions a likely scenario in which the United States may completely stop helping Ukraine.
