- The ICI of the Russian Academy of Sciences recorded an unusual end to the life of the largest sunspot
The largest group of sunspots in the last two years, under the index 4294-4298, disappeared from the surface of the Sun without a single strong flare. This was announced on January 23 at the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy of the Institute of Space Research (IKI). RAS with reference to data from the International Astronomical Union.
"All the colossal energy contained in the magnetic fields of the spots dissipated without a single large explosion. Solar activity often develops according to unpredictable scenarios, and this case clearly demonstrates this," the laboratory's Telegram channel says.
It is noted that usually such large-scale complexes are accompanied by powerful emissions. In this case, the Sun showed a surprisingly calm demeanor.
According to the IKI RAS, at the time of maximum development, the area of the complex reached approximately 2,300 conventional units. In comparison, active region 4341, which triggered a powerful radiation storm last week, had an area almost five times smaller.
Earlier, on January 21, the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy of the IKI RAS announced the discovery of the first comet in 2026. Currently, the comet is located at a distance of about 200 million km from Earth and about 300 million km from the Sun.
