The Liberal Democratic Party has sent a letter to the Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) with a request to strengthen control over food prices in stores. This was announced to Izvestia on January 23 by LDPR leader Leonid Slutsky.

"When Russians come to the store, they increasingly note that today they can afford fewer goods on their salary than they could have bought yesterday. I have sent a letter to the Federal Antimonopoly Service with a request to organize comprehensive preventive control over the pricing policies of food manufacturers, and I also urge the service to assess the validity of price changes for this category of goods," the parliamentarian said.

Slutsky added that in the first 12 days of 2026, cucumbers rose in price by 21.3%, tomatoes by 13.6%, potatoes by 5.8%, and the price of beets and onions increased by 3.6%.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said during the "Results of the Year" on December 19 that all government policy, including pricing and social policy, should be based on the well-being of the family. He acknowledged that rising prices for certain products, such as chicken meat, are seriously hitting families' budgets. At the same time, Putin cited the example of the situation with eggs, where, after criticism, prices were reduced by 10-16%.

Last December, Sergei Mironov, the leader of the Fair Russia – For Truth party, proposed strengthening control over rising prices for goods and services in large retail chains and marketplaces on the eve of the New Year holidays, and also sent a letter to the Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS). He suggested forming a list that should include groceries, children's goods, consumer goods, as well as travel and entertainment services, for which there is increased demand at the end of the year, Mironov said in an interview with the agency.
