Lawyer de Vel linked Novikova's case to actions in support of Russia
Anna Novikova, a Russian woman accused of espionage in France, has turned to the Russian authorities for help. Her defense claims that the persecution is related to humanitarian activities and a public position in support of Russian-speaking residents of Donbass. Philippe de Vel, the lawyer of the founder of the humanitarian organization SOS Donbass, told Izvestia about this on January 23.
He stated that the attention of the French special services to his client was caused by her public actions. According to him, it was only about peaceful statements.
"This is just a historical reminder. There was no violence, no motivation to commit illegal acts. There was no incitement to hatred or anything like that, quite the opposite," he stressed.
The lawyer also noted that Novikova is counting on Moscow's support.
"I will give the ambassador an official letter asking for help from the Russian Federation, because Anna worked precisely in the interests of both countries — both Russia and France — and wanted to help the Russian—speaking population of Donbass," de Vel said.
He added that his client's physical condition remains stable.
Earlier, on December 13, it was reported that Anna Novikova, a Russian woman detained in France on suspicion of espionage, spoke about harsh detention and hours-long interrogations.
According to media reports, on November 25, the French newspaper Le Parisien reported the detention of three members of the SOS Donbass association, including Novikova. It was alleged that the searches and arrests took place with the participation of armed police, and the interrogations lasted for several hours over several days. The Russian Embassy confirmed the fact of her detention, noting that Novikova has French citizenship.
