Magnesium deficiency is often found even in the presence of this mineral in the diet, especially in winter and in people with chronic diseases or an unbalanced diet. This was announced on January 23 by Alexander Konkov, Head of the Department of Therapy at ROSBIOTECH University. "Газете.Ru ".

"Magnesium is one of the key minerals for the normal functioning of the body. It participates in more than 300 biochemical reactions, including the work of muscles and the nervous system, energy metabolism, the work of the heart and blood vessels, as well as protein and DNA synthesis," said Konkov.

According to him, people who experience chronic stress and high mental stress, as well as those who actively engage in sports or heavy physical labor, most often need additional magnesium intake. The mineral plays an important role in muscle contraction and relaxation, reduces the risk of cramps and promotes recovery after exertion. In addition, magnesium is important for people with cardiovascular diseases and hypertension, as it participates in the regulation of heart rhythm and blood pressure levels.

"Regularly maintaining optimal magnesium levels improves mood, reduces anxiety, prevents muscle cramps, maintains normal blood pressure and heart rate, and improves sleep quality. Magnesium is also involved in the absorption of calcium and vitamin D, affecting bone health," the expert said.

He noted that magnesium is relatively safe when ingested, but excess supplements can cause side effects, including digestive disorders, weakness, and decreased blood pressure. In case of chronic renal failure, taking such supplements is contraindicated. The average recommended daily allowance for adults is 300-400 mg, while the dosage and form of the drug are selected individually and determined by the doctor. Blood tests, an assessment of symptoms, and specialist advice help determine the deficiency.

It was emphasized that supplements are not a substitute for a full-fledged diet, and the main sources of magnesium remain nuts, seeds, legumes, whole grains, green leafy vegetables and dark chocolate.

Earlier, on January 22, Candidate of Medical Sciences, doctor, clinical pharmacologist Tatiana Molostova told how to suspect vitamin deficiency in winter. The specialist warned that unpleasant symptoms in the cold season are often associated with a deficiency of vitamins and minerals.
