Bronzit commented on his cartoon's Oscar nomination
Russian animation artist Konstantin Bronzit shared with Izvestia on January 22 that the nomination of his cartoon "Three Sisters" for the Oscar is a test of the American Academy for the value of craftsmanship.
"We don't have an answer, but I can guess. The first is the skill that the film is built on. In a sense, <...> today, the Academy is holding an exam in front of me. I tested them with my film — how much skill they value today, namely the skill of the director. <...> The Academy passed the exam — skill is not dead today, it is important to them, they see it, pay attention to it and vote for it," said Bronzit.
He added that of all the works shortlisted for the award, his work was the only one that was light and "funny," rather than gloomy and oppressive to the audience like the works of competitors.
The artist emphasized. that it was important for him to show the director's work in his cartoon, where words are not used — this, in his opinion, is more difficult than creating dialogue pictures.
"My movie is without words, and all the other directors use words, words, words, all the films are full of voiceover text and dialogues. The more words, the less directing, because you can tell everything in words," Bronzit explained.
Speaking about his third Oscar nomination, the artist reported high expectations of receiving the award, but he is ready for any results.
"This time, to be honest, they are higher than ever, judging by who got into the nominees. The main competitor is the film Butterfly, a French film. It seems to me that, again, the results can be anything," Bronzit added.
The cartoon "Three Sisters" by Bronzit (credited as Timur Kognov) was nominated for an Oscar on January 22. It is noted that the film is nominated in the category "Best animated Short Film". In addition, such cartoons as "Butterfly", "Evergreen", and "Pension Plan" were nominated.
Last December, it was also reported that Bronzit's "Three Sisters" was shortlisted for the Academy Award in the Best Animated Short Film category. According to Bronzit, he decided to include a pseudonym in the credits as a social experiment to see if the painting could succeed without a famous name.
