The Danish authorities cannot just take away the land under the Russian embassy, since diplomatic real estate is immune. This was announced on January 22 by Russian Ambassador to Denmark Vladimir Barbin.

"We have immunity, it's almost impossible to just take away the land, to take away the building," he said on the Rossiya 24 TV channel.

The diplomat stressed that a separate action plan for this case was not developed precisely because of the theoretical nature of such a threat.

When asked about Denmark's possible claims to other Russian facilities on its territory, the ambassador refused to go into details, citing the impracticability of publicly discussing such issues. Barbin confirmed that Russia has many properties in Denmark, including Copenhagen.

"Indeed, we have many properties in Denmark, including Copenhagen. It would probably be a mistake to discuss these issues in the public space," he concluded.

On January 20, Barbin said that the Danish authorities were threatening to take away the land on which the buildings of the Russian Embassy in the country are located. He added that in the face of strong opposition from the Danish authorities, it is difficult to resolve practical issues, including obtaining and extending accreditation for embassy staff.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov joked on January 20 that Denmark's threats to take away land from the Russian embassy in Copenhagen may be related to the resettlement of Greenlanders. He also called the Copenhagen Municipality's decision diplomatic rudeness and assured that the Kremlin would respond to it.
