RIHF with the support of the Russian Olympic Committee IIHF sanctions
The Russian Ice Hockey Federation (RIHF), with the support of the Russian Olympic Committee, will appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against the decision of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), which upheld the sanctions against the Russian national teams. This was announced on January 22 by the Minister of Sports of the Russian Federation, Chairman of the Russian Olympic Committee Mikhail Degtyarev.
"The IIHF's references to so-called security considerations are untenable. Such an argument has already been the subject of CAS proceedings in the framework of a lawsuit against the International Luge Federation, and the court found it unfounded," Degtyarev wrote on his Telegram channel.
He stressed that Russian lawyers had provided many examples of athletes from the Russian Federation participating in international competitions without incident. The minister added that Russia will consistently defend the rights of its representatives to equal participation in competitions.
"The process of Russia's return to world sport will continue," Degtyarev concluded.
On the same day, the IIHF announced that the federation would consider returning juniors from Russia to its tournaments in the 2027/28 season. The decision on the reinstatement of Russians will be made based on the results of an assessment of the safety conditions of players at tournaments. If these risks are reduced, the IIHF will contact the Russian Ice Hockey Federation in the coming months.
