Lactose is broken down during the production of fermented dairy products, so they can be consumed even with intolerance. This was stated by the Director General of the National Union of Milk Producers (Soyuzmoloko). Artyom Belov reported on Thursday, January 22.

He clarified that lactose is a sugar that is present in milk. You can buy lactose-free milk, where this sugar is broken down thanks to special technologies, the expert added.

"At the same time, if you drink fermented milk products, the procedure for the production of fermented milk products implies that lactose is broken down. This means that kefir, ryazhenka, sour cream and other fermented dairy products can be completely consumed, even if you are lactose intolerant," the Moscow City News agency quoted Belov as saying.

He added that a significant part of cheeses, including semi-hard and hard cheeses, do not contain lactose.

Therefore, if you are lactose intolerant, you can eat fermented dairy products, cheeses and ice cream, Belov concluded.
