- The IIHF will consider the return of Russian juniors to tournaments in the 2027-28 season
The Council of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) will consider the return of Russian juniors to its tournaments in the 2027-2028 season. This was announced on January 22 in the press service of the organization.
"The IIHF Council has reviewed the recommendations of the IOC and will study the issue of reinstating young players (under 18) from the national and club teams of Russia and Belarus in their championships for the 2027-2028 season," the website says.
The decision on the reinstatement of Russians will be made based on the results of an assessment of the safety conditions of players at tournaments. If these risks are reduced in the coming months, the IIHF will contact the Russian Ice Hockey Federation.
Mikhail Degtyarev, Minister of Sports of the Russian Federation and Chairman of the Olympic Committee of the country, announced on January 19 that the World Curling Federation had allowed the Russian junior national teams to compete with the flag and anthem. The decision was made on the recommendation of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The new rules will be in effect this season, at the World Junior Curling Championships on May 5-10, 2026.
