The doctor dispelled the myth of sun protection with the help of foundation with SPF
In winter, it is necessary to continue using sunscreen (SPF). The skin needs protection from UV radiation throughout the year. In winter, the activity of UVB rays decreases, but UVA radiation acts all year round without changing its intensity. On January 22, a dermatologist, cosmetologist, and co-owner of Dr. Omarov's clinic network, Zarema Omarova, told Izvestia about this.
"UVA radiation waves are able to penetrate deep into the skin layers, destroying collagen and elastin, causing wrinkles, and reducing skin elasticity. Moreover, the effects of UV radiation on a clear, sunny winter day are only getting worse. Snow can reflect up to 80% of the sun's rays," she warned.
In addition, in winter, the skin becomes more vulnerable due to cold air and heating, and ultraviolet rays easily damage the lipid barrier, exacerbating existing skin problems.
The cosmetologist noticed that foundation cream with SPF cannot be considered as a full-fledged protection from the sun. This is a popular misconception. Moreover, foundation is usually applied in a very thin layer on the skin, and the SPF content in this amount will clearly not be enough to fully protect against UV rays.
"If you are not in hot countries and spend very little time outside in winter, then in general, if you use cosmetics with SPF, they can provide some protection factor. In this case, choose a foundation with a sanskrit function, where there is a UVA icon, or the abbreviation PA+(+++) and PPD, or the phrase Broad Spectrum. The SPF index indicates that the product blocks UVB rays, and these marks mean protection from type A ultraviolet radiation or broad-spectrum protection — that is, from both types of rays," explained Omarova.
It is important to keep in mind that SPF values in cosmetics are not combined. If more serious sun protection is required, then you need to use a sanskrit.
The SPF cream is applied to clean skin, under makeup. When applying sanskrit, special attention should be paid to the area around the eyes and the wings of the nose. In the city, using a cream with SPF 30 will be enough to provide basic protection.
"If you plan to spend time outdoors or go to the mountains, where the UV level increases, then you will need more serious protection – products with SPF 50. Moreover, the sanskrit needs to be updated every two hours," the doctor concluded.
Elena Ilchuk, cosmetologist, founder and chief physician of ELEVANS clinic, said on January 5 that in winter the skin, even if it is initially in a normal state, becomes drier and more sensitive, as it lacks moisture. Ilchuk recalled that temperature fluctuations also affect the vessels of the face, which narrow in the cold and expand in the heat. This process can cause redness and increased symptoms in people with rosacea, as well as cause inflammation on oily skin.
