The Central Bank explained the procedure for handling damaged banknotes
Banknotes with minor damages are required to be accepted for payment in stores, and banknotes with serious defects can be exchanged at the bank. This was reported on January 22 in the press service of the Central Directorate of the Bank of Russia for the Central Federal District.
The Central Bank explained that the bill remains solvent if the denomination, series and number are clearly distinguishable on it.
"A bill with small tears, punctures, a torn corner or edge should be accepted for payment at any point of sale," the regulator's press service told RIA Novosti.
If the damage is more significant, citizens were advised to contact the bank.
"The key condition is that you must keep at least 55% of the original area of the banknote. Collect all the fragments that remain and bring them to the bank," the Bank of Russia stressed.
They added that banknotes with lower safety cannot be exchanged, except in rare cases when one banknote can be folded from two fragments.
Earlier in the day, it was reported that in the future, Russian banknotes may become predominantly polymer. Experts noted that such banknotes are more durable and wear-resistant, as well as provide more opportunities for design and protection against counterfeiting. Also, the appearance of non-standard colors and images reflecting the events of the modern history of Russia was not excluded.
