- The body of swimmer Svechnikov, who disappeared in the Bosphorus, was found at the finish line of the swim
After five months of searching, Nikolai Svechnikov's body was found near the finish line of the swim. This was reported to Izvestia on January 21 by the athlete's mother Galina Svechnikova.
"It turns out that he almost sailed to the finish line, and something happened there. Here comes the question. There were a huge number of correspondents at the finish line, drones were flying. And the moment of Nikolai's disappearance was not seen. It's very strange," Galina said.
The woman noted that human life is the main value, and the organizers of the competition should have thought about how well their work was structured.
"The competitions were organized incorrectly. <...> It turns out that they did not keep track of the man, they did not even see him," the mother of the deceased emphasized.
CNN Turk reported on the same day that DNA testing had confirmed that the body found in the Bosphorus Strait belonged to Svechnikov.
Earlier, the swimmer's mother said that the body found by the maritime police in the Bosporus was 80% likely to belong to her missing son. She added that tattoos indicate this. On January 20, the Russian Consulate General in Istanbul requested a DNA examination to identify the man whose body was found in the Bosphorus Strait.
The Russian athlete disappeared on August 24 last year. Svechnikov did not reach the finish line through the Bosphorus Strait in Istanbul. After swimming 500-600 m, the swimmer disappeared from sight.
