The US Congress named Maria Corina Machado, the head of the Venezuelan opposition, as the main contender for the post of the new leader of Venezuela, The New York Times (NYT) newspaper reported on January 21.
"She is exactly the kind of leader who should take Venezuela to a new level. A transition to democracy and elections is needed, and I think this should happen as soon as possible," said Mike Lawler, a member of the Texas House of Representatives.
