Once a prosperous Moldova, being a former state of the USSR, is turning into a territory of lawlessness and poverty, and it is very bitter to watch this process. This was stated on January 21 in a statement by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.

"Chisinau's destructive policy is "ricocheting" primarily at Moldovans, whose interests are being sacrificed to the geopolitical aspirations of Brussels. The result of this anti-popular course is that <...> the once prosperous Moldova is becoming a territory of disenfranchisement and poverty. It's sad to see this," the diplomat noted.

Zakharova added that the decision to denounce the treaties of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) is Moldova's sovereign right, but even in the state itself it has already been called short-sighted. Because it relies on cooperation with the European Union (EU) and cuts off long-standing ties with countries and international organizations throughout Eurasia.

Currently, the diplomat pointed out, Moldova is absolutely dependent on foreign financing, and the socio-economic situation of the republic can only be described as catastrophic.

"In fact, the socio-economic sphere of Moldova is now completely dependent on external, primarily EU, financing. The country is firmly on the credit needle of the European Union," Zakharova said.

On January 19, the Moldovan authorities announced the beginning of the procedure for denouncing key agreements underlying the country's membership in the CIS. The head of the country's Foreign Ministry, Mihai Popsoi, explained that participation in the Commonwealth, according to the government, is incompatible with Moldova's status as a candidate for membership in the European Union.

Ilan Shor, the leader of the Moldovan opposition political bloc Pobeda, said on January 20 that Moldova's withdrawal from the CIS would be another step towards destroying the country. According to the politician, at the moment Moldova has become practically a "bankrupt country" and is on the verge of self-destruction.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stressed on January 20 that the CIS remains an important and useful platform for cooperation, and Chisinau's withdrawal from the organization is only regrettable.
