Europe is concerned about excessive dependence on gas supplies from the United States amid the confrontation over Greenland's ownership. The Handelsblatt newspaper wrote about this on January 21, citing research by European institutions.

According to the newspaper, in 2025, the share of imported gas from the United States in Germany reached 92%. When the European Union (EU) tried to abandon Russian gas and diversify its fuel sources, European countries still found themselves dependent on supplies from one country, the United States.

"Historically, the intervention of the US government in the gas market in order to put pressure on Europe seemed unthinkable. In today's geopolitical context, such an assumption is doubtful," said Raffaele Piria, senior researcher at the Berlin Ecologic Research Institute.

According to her, European politicians argue for purchases in the United States by the fact that American suppliers act solely based on market logic.

The Politico newspaper said on January 18 that the EU had fallen into an energy trap from the United States by rejecting gas from Russia. At the same time, due to the policy pursued by American President Donald Trump, relations between European countries and the United States are becoming very vulnerable.

Political analyst Ivan Mezyuho, in an interview with Izvestia on January 20, said that Europe does not have any strategic autonomy and economic sovereignty, which French President Emmanuel Macron is talking about. According to him, European countries are even ready to start talking with Russia amid fear and uncertainty over Trump's policies.
