The Pentagon leadership intends to reduce the participation of the US Armed Forces in about 30 NATO structures. This was reported on January 20 by the Washington Post (WP) newspaper, citing sources.

"The upcoming move will affect about 200 military personnel and weaken US participation in the activities of almost 30 NATO organizations, including centers of excellence that train alliance forces in various areas of warfare, these sources said," the publication says.

According to sources, the Pentagon plans not to replace employees as their term ends, which could stretch the process for several years. The cuts will affect advisory groups on energy security, naval combat operations, special operations, and intelligence.

At the same time, it is emphasized that the decision has been made for several months and is not related to tensions between the United States and NATO allies over Greenland.

Earlier in the day, US President Donald Trump, during a briefing for journalists at the White House, said that NATO's strength lies in US membership in the alliance. He noted that NATO is only as strong as the United States itself, and without the participation of the United States, the alliance does not have significant power.
