In Russia, at the points of selection for military service under the contract, work was carried out on recruiting troops for unmanned systems of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation (RF Armed Forces). This was announced on January 21 by the Russian Ministry of Defense.
It is specified that citizens were selected for the positions of operators of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), engineers, technicians and other specialties.
First of all, they paid attention to the analytical abilities of the citizen, the ability to use a computer and the developed vestibular apparatus and fine motor skills of the hands.
Russian citizens with military service experience, as well as drone pilots, aircraft modelers, and specialists in information technology, electronics, and radio engineering had an advantage in the selection process.
"My friend went to serve on UAV copters. So I decided to follow him. I came to the selection point, they let me fly on the computer. We flew, I showed them my skills. <...> And I decided to integrate my civilian experience, which I gained by flying drones, into the military structure and serve under contract," said Alexander, a candidate for military service under contract to the unmanned systems troops.
The contract was signed with candidates for one year.
On December 19, Russian President Vladimir Putin said during the "Results of the Year" that many Russians want to sign contracts for military service, and more than 400,000 people came to military enlistment offices in 2025. Among those who wish to serve are very young people, students of various universities. They take academic leave to sign a contract and go to the front, most often they participate in combat operations as drone operators, Putin said.
