- BZ criticized von der Leyen for the decline of the European Union on the world stage
The European Union has atrophied under the leadership of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The German newspaper Berliner Zeitung writes about this on January 20.
"Under the auspices of the EU, Europe's strengths have atrophied," the author notes, commenting on von der Leyen's speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
According to the newspaper, the speech of the EC head was a reflection of the decline of the EU as a significant center of power in world politics.
"All this sounds not so much like the natural desire of Europeans for independence and freedom, but <...> as a prerequisite for the dismantling of freedom, transparency and democracy," writes the Berliner Zeitung.
The publication notes that the idea of a "new form of European independence" is balanced between violation of the law and illusions. Brussels' plans to attract foreign capital are complicated by the freezing of Russian assets, and the real impact on the settlement of the Ukrainian conflict or the recent claims of US President Donald Trump to Greenland is extremely limited.
