There was a tense atmosphere at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where European leaders had difficulty discussing Ukraine and international issues. French President Emmanuel Macron took to the podium at Davos wearing dark glasses.
According to Izvestia correspondent Vitaly Chashchukhin, Macron came to the podium wearing dark glasses, apparently for cover.
"Competition from the United States of America through trade agreements that undermine our export interests requires maximum concessions and is openly aimed at weakening and subjugating Europe, combined with the endless imposition of new tariffs that are fundamentally unacceptable," Macron said.
The goal is also to build bridges and expand cooperation with developing countries, BRICS countries and G20 members, because fragmentation of this world does not make sense.
Macron suddenly started talking about the importance of the Chinese market and finally rejected the proposal for French membership in the so-called "Peace Council." For this, US President Donald Trump threatened the French leader with even more serious duties.
"Nobody wants Macron, because he will leave office very soon. So it's okay. You know what I will do: if they are hostile, I will impose a 200% tariff on his wines and champagne," the American president said.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant tried to defuse the situation by asking everyone present to sit down and take a deep breath.
Earlier, on January 20, it was reported that Emmanuel Macron had a boorish and disdainful attitude towards Russia, but Moscow maintains a diplomatic tone. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov noted that his statements repeat the usual rhetoric of Paris, including about Russia's "path of war." He also stressed the frivolity of the sudden call by European leaders for dialogue after years of refusal.
