Illegal mining of cryptocurrencies damages the Russian economy by almost 20 billion rubles a year. This was announced on January 21 by Nikolai Shulginov, Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Energy.

According to him, illegal mining leads to a shortage of power, a decrease in the quality of electricity, an increase in the load on the power grid and the inability to connect social facilities and new housing.

"According to estimates by the Stolypin Institute, the annual damage to the Russian economy due to losses in the energy sector amounts to more than 10 billion rubles, and unpaid taxes amount to 9.6 billion rubles," the deputy told RIA Novosti.

He recalled that due to the projected shortage of electricity, cryptocurrency mining is completely prohibited in 10 regions of Russia, including a number of subjects of the North Caucasus, the LPR, the DPR, the Kherson and Zaporizhia regions. Partial restrictions are in effect in Buryatia and the Trans-Baikal Territory, where a complete ban is planned to be introduced in the near future.

Earlier, on January 19, it was reported that a bill on administrative liability for violations in the field of digital currency mining had been submitted to the State Duma. The document provides for fines with confiscation of equipment for mining in regions with a ban, as well as for operating without being included in the register or exceeding energy consumption limits.
