Scott Bessent urges Europe to show restraint on Greenland issue
On January 20, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent called on European countries not to aggravate the situation around Greenland and refrain from imposing retaliatory trade tariffs on goods from the United States.
The minister noted that the Europeans' quick and emotional reactions would only be harmful, and their communication with the American side would require restraint and openness.
"The President [of the United States Donald Trump] will be here tomorrow, and he will convey his position. I think he has meetings scheduled. And yet, it is important to remain open in order to understand where this rapid reaction is coming from, why the "no" was so quickly voiced," said Bessent on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos.
The politician also called on European allies to "take a deep breath" and not respond in light of the new tariffs introduced by Trump related to the issue of Greenland. The minister recalled that the topic of this island has been of interest to American leaders for 150 years.
The day before, Bessent described Europe's potential response to the US president's duties on Greenland as an unwise step. The minister expressed his position on the question of whether Washington is concerned about possible measures from Europe in response to American duties.
Earlier, on January 14, Trump said that relations between the United States and Denmark were "good," but stressed that Greenland was important for Washington's national security. Later, he imposed duties of 10% with the possibility of increasing to 25% for a number of European countries in connection with the situation around Greenland.
