Russia's invitation to the G7 summit in Paris is linked to the insignificance of the European Union (EU) amid pressure from the United States. This opinion was expressed by political scientist Ivan Mezyuho in an interview with Izvestia on January 20.

"The invitation of the Russian Federation to the G7 platform indicates that the European Union is becoming more and more aware of its insignificance against the background of pressure from the United States of America, which it is experiencing today," Mezyuho said.

The political scientist stressed that when Europe traded oil and gas with the Russian Federation, it was more subjective in international issues, and after the disruption of the Nord Streams, the dependence of EU member states and the UK on the United States increased several times. In addition, he added that European countries are increasingly realizing their insignificance and inability to independently maneuver foreign policy against the background of attempts by US President Donald Trump to take Greenland under American control.

"[French President Emmanuel] With his initiative to meet with the Russian Federation, Macron is trying to intercept Donald Trump's peace initiatives. Today, if we talk about the West, then only Russia and the United States have more or less constant communication," Mezyuho said.

According to him, Europe, which initially tried to destroy contacts between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Trump on the settlement of the Ukrainian conflict, is now simply trying to intercept these contacts from the American president and may "remain out of business" after the settlement.

On the same day, Trump posted on the Truth Social social network a personal message from Macron with the latter's proposal to hold a meeting of the Group of Seven (G7) in Paris with the participation of Russia. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, in turn, noted that Russia had not received an invitation to the G7 meeting.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on January 20 that Macron had allowed rudeness and disregard for Russia, but Moscow is above such rhetoric. He pointed out that it was not serious that European leaders, who had been saying for four years that it was impossible to sit down at the same table with Russia, suddenly declared the need to conduct a dialogue with Moscow.

On December 4, 2025, Putin stated in an interview with the Indian channel India Today that Russia did not want to return to the Group of Eight (G8). Putin also noted that the G7 remains an important platform on which its participants work, discuss and make decisions, wishing them all the best.
