On January 20, French President Emmanuel Macron called the situation in which Europe would have to use coercive tools against the United States insane.

"I mean, the craziest thing is that we may find ourselves in a situation where we will have to use a mechanism to counter coercion against the United States for the first time if they impose additional tariffs. Can you imagine that? This is madness," Macron said at the Davos Economic Forum.

The French president noted that the unilateral actions of the United States in trade, including the imposition of new tariffs, undermine the interests of Europe and threaten its economic sovereignty, and competition with China creates additional risks for the industrial sector.

Macron said on January 17 that the threats made by US President Donald Trump against Europe to impose duties on the Danish autonomous unit Greenland were unacceptable and would be met with a coordinated response.
