- CNN has learned about the discussion in Europe about the boycott of the World Cup in the USA because of Greenland
Some European countries are discussing a boycott of the World Cup in the United States due to the situation around Greenland. This was reported on January 20 by CNN.
"Some lawmakers in the UK and Germany are even considering <...> a boycott of the FIFA World Cup this summer, part of which will be held in the United States, and at which [US President Donald] Trump is clearly planning to draw all the attention to himself," the article says.
According to the newspaper, there are various proposals for retaliatory measures among European politicians. Some consider it necessary to start a full-fledged trade war.
Earlier, Jurgen Hardt, a representative of the parliamentary faction of the Christian Democratic and Christian Social Unions (CDU/CSU), had already proposed boycotting the 2026 FIFA World Cup on January 16.
On January 14, two-time Stanley Cup winner and Olympic hockey champion in the Czech national team Dominik Hasek commented on the cancellation of 17,000 tickets for the FIFA World Cup in the United States. He noted that the United States should not host major sports tournaments such as the FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games.
Earlier in the day, Trump said Denmark was not capable of defending Greenland. According to him, some Danish officials don't even visit the island. Trump stressed that the United States must get the island.
Prior to that, on January 17, the American leader announced the imposition of duties in the amount of 10% on Greenland by the United States, with the possibility of increasing to 25% against France, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Finland.
