A relative of Russian professional swimmer Nikolai Svechnikov, who disappeared while swimming across the Bosphorus in Istanbul, went to identify the man found in the strait. A friend of the athlete told Izvestia about this on January 20.
"I asked his wife, she said that indeed, the body had been found, but it was not yet a fact that it was him. One of the relatives is leaving for identification," the man said.
He also added that the description of the found man resembles a missing swimmer.
On the same day, the Russian Consulate General in Istanbul demanded a DNA examination to identify the man whose body was found in the Bosporus on January 20. The Russian diplomatic mission stated that it would inform about the development of the situation additionally.
Svechnikov disappeared on August 24 last year. A professional swimmer did not reach the finish line across the Bosphorus in Istanbul. After swimming 500-600 m, the athlete disappeared from sight. Honored Master of Sports, world record holder in swimming Nikolai Skvortsov suggested that the man could have been swept away by the current.
