The media reported an increase in the length of military service in Austria from 2027
The Austrian Military Service Commission will present options for increasing the length of service in the country's armed forces from 2027. This was reported on January 20 by the Heute portal.
"The Federal Government Commission is expected to propose two models that will be implemented next year (2027 — Ed.)," the material says.
Two models of conscription are being considered. Thus, the first option provides for a basic draft for a period of six months and an additional 100 days of military training, during which conscripts will take an active part in the exercises.
However, the authors of the article note that the military service commission itself considers the "8+2" model to be preferable: eight months of military service and two months of intensive training after sending a serviceman to the reserve.
In addition, the issue of introducing compulsory military service for women may be considered. However, the adoption of this amendment is likely to occur no earlier than the mid-2030s, the authors of the article write.
In December last year, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that military service could be returned to Germany in the coming years and compulsory alternative civilian service restored. He also expressed regret that the German Constitution does not provide for the possibility of compulsory military service for women.
