The European Union (EU) will include the topic of Arctic security in its new security strategy, which will be approved in 2026. This was announced on January 20 by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.

"That is why Europe is preparing its own security strategy, which we plan to present later this year. As part of this, we are updating our Arctic strategy," von der Leyen said.

She noted that Europe needs to respond in a timely manner to new changes in the security architecture and the realities that EU countries have to face. According to her, the new Arctic strategy will be based on the principle that allows nations to determine their own future.

CNN reported on this day that the United States and Denmark are able to reduce tensions around Greenland by updating the agreement on the protection of the island, signed in 1951. It is assumed that the updated agreements may provide additional conditions, including strict guarantees aimed at limiting or prohibiting Chinese investments in Greenland.

On the same day, US President Donald Trump declared that Denmark was not capable of defending Greenland. According to him, some Danish officials don't even visit the island. He added that the United States must get the country. Following telephone conversations with Rutte, Trump also announced that a meeting of various parties on the situation with Greenland would be held in Davos. He noted that he clearly expressed the importance of Greenland for the security of the United States and the whole world.
