French President Emmanuel Macron has allowed rudeness and disregard for Russia, but Moscow is above this rhetoric. This was stated on January 20 by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov during a press conference on the results of Russian diplomacy in 2025.

"Last year, French President Emmanuel Macron called President [of Russia Vladimir] To Putin. Nothing he said in this telephone conversation was any different from what Paris, including Macron himself, says, has said and continues to say publicly," Lavrov said.

He also quoted the words of a French politician in November 2025 after a meeting with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky that Russia "chose the path of war itself" and "cannot come to terms with its history."

"A Frenchman can't help but remember the history of Russia. He cannot fail to understand that <...> the story is that, starting or continuing with Napoleon and continuing with Hitler, who put almost the whole of Europe under arms in order to defeat and destroy Russia," Lavrov said.

He added that it was not serious at all when European leaders, who had been saying for four years that it was impossible to sit down at the same table with Russia, suddenly declared that it was necessary to talk with Moscow.

"Those who want to talk to us seriously, I advise you not to talk about it loudly and then proudly look around the audience, and if you have a serious interest, you just need to call, as is customary for diplomats, without any accusations," he said during a press conference on the results of Russian diplomacy in 2025.

Earlier in the day, US President Donald Trump published a personal message from Macron with the latter's proposal to hold a meeting of the Group of Seven (G7) in Paris with the participation of Russia. Later, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov announced that Russia had not received an invitation to the G7 meeting.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on January 14 that Germany wants to achieve a balance with Russia as its largest European neighbor. As the Chancellor noted, he has always maintained that "Russia is a European country."
