In the Stavropol Territory, about 200 birds and bats were returned to nature in 2025. All the animals had previously successfully recovered. The results of the activity for 1 year were summed up in the Stavropol wild animal rehabilitation center "Pelikan".
StavropolMedia news agency said that at the beginning of last year, volunteers took an active part in eliminating the consequences of the environmental disaster in the Kerch Strait. Environmentalists rescued birds affected by a fuel oil spill.
Several dozen different mammals, from a tiny weasel to a bear, have gone through the path of rehabilitation or feeding. After that, they were returned to nature.
New permanent residents have appeared in the center, including Magnus the roe deer, Funtik the blind boar and Ivor the donkey with a broken leg. These animals need long-term care.
In November, Alexey Lopatin, director of the Borisyak Paleontological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, announced that a new species of extinct giant bear, Borisyak's urakan, which lived in Russia about 5-6 million years ago, had been identified and described. According to Lopatin, this bear was comparable in size to the largest modern brown bears and was an active predator capable of fast running. The study was conducted on remains about 5.5–6 million years old, found in the Stavropol Territory. So far, Borisyak's urakan is known only by one individual.
