Russia has approved new GOST standards for alcohol burners for cars

Rosstandart has approved new GOST standards that establish uniform test methods for driver condition monitoring systems (alcoholics). The documents will enter into force on May 1, 2026, the agency announced on January 20. It is stated that they will ensure the reliability of devices that prevent driving while intoxicated, and should create transparent conditions for assessing their compliance.

GOST R 70637-2023, which has been in force since 2023, regulates that alcohol detectors should detect ethanol vapors in the air exhaled by the driver, block the engine when the permissible level is exceeded and transmit monitoring information in such cases, including through the ERA-GLONASS system. The document applies to vehicles used for commercial passenger transportation and transportation of dangerous goods.

Two new standards have been approved for detailed verification of compliance with these requirements. GOST R 72377-2026 establishes uniform test methods covering critical aspects of system operation. It regulates the verification of all operating modes of the system, pays attention to testing algorithms and mechanisms for blocking the motor, as well as checking the reliability of data transmission, including in conditions of unstable network communication.

The second standard (GOST R 72378-2026) establishes test methods for the ethanol vapor indicator and provides mechanisms for evaluating its characteristics necessary for the operation of the driver's condition monitoring system.

The day before, it was reported that a bill was submitted to the State Duma, which proposes to tighten administrative responsibility for installing external lighting devices and light sources on cars and operating them, including LED lamps when installed improperly, which blind and create other obstacles for drivers of oncoming and passing vehicles.
