Lavrov pointed out the need to create a Palestinian state
The need to establish a Palestinian state is relevant in the context of US President Donald Trump's Peace Council initiative. This was announced on January 20 by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov during a press conference on the results of Russian diplomacy in 2025.
According to him, Russia is convinced that in order to resolve the conflict in the Middle East, it is important to comply with the UN decision on the creation of a Palestinian state.
"This criterion remains fully relevant in the light of President Trump's already sensational initiative to establish a Peace Council," he said.
Earlier, on January 14, the Axios portal reported that the United States had sent invitations to a number of states to join the "Peace Council" on the Gaza Strip. According to the portal, the first meeting within the council may take place as early as next week. Trump is expected to chair the meeting. On January 15, the American leader announced that the formation of the "Peace Council" had been completed. He also added that, in his opinion, this is the greatest and most prestigious council that has ever been created.
Russian Presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov announced on January 19 that Russian leader Vladimir Putin had received an invitation from the United States to join the "Peace Council" for the settlement of the Gaza Strip. He also said that the Russian side is currently studying this proposal in detail and hopes to contact the United States to clarify all the details.
