Against the background of a rapid change in the orientation of the magnetic field, a second powerful surge of geomagnetic disturbances with a level not lower than G4 is possible. This was announced on January 20 in the press service of the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy of the Institute of Space Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IKI RAS).

"It looks like the second peak of the storm is beginning. In the near future, geomagnetic indexes may return to at least G4 levels," the laboratory wrote on its Telegram channel.

It is noted that the speed of the solar wind has stabilized at 900 km/s, which exceeds the usual figures by 2.5–3 times. The values of the magnetic field induction near the Earth remain 10 times higher than normal.

Earlier in the day, the IKI RAS laboratory reported that a G4.33 planetary magnetic storm was taking place on Earth, while the main question remains whether the highest level of G5, which has been observed only once in the last 20 years, in May 2024, will be reached in the coming hours.
