Representatives of Denmark decided to skip the Davos forum because of Greenland
Danish representatives have decided not to participate in the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos this week amid the escalating dispute over Greenland. This was reported on January 19 in Bloomberg.
"This year, representatives of the Danish government were invited, and any decisions about the presence are made by the relevant government. We can confirm that the Danish government will not be represented in Davos this week," the publication quoted Danish officials as saying.
Earlier in the day, the media reported on the deployment of Danish troops to Greenland. It is specified that the chief of the Army Staff Peter Boysen is also arriving in the group. In addition, Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said in a Facebook post (owned by Meta, recognized as extremist and banned in Russia) that Greenland would not allow pressure to be exerted on itself.
On January 14, US President Donald Trump reiterated that US relations with Denmark are "good," but Greenland is necessary for Washington to ensure national security. Nielsen noted that he considers the "repeated rhetoric" of the United States regarding the island to be disrespectful and unacceptable.
The Bild newspaper reported on January 15 that the first military personnel from European countries arrived in Greenland amid Trump's statements about the need for the island to join the United States. According to the newspaper, the Hercules military transport aircraft of the Danish army landed at the airport of the capital of Greenland Nuuk, later units from Germany, the Netherlands, Canada, Sweden, Great Britain and Norway also went to Greenland.
Later, on January 17, Trump announced that Washington was imposing duties of 10% with the possibility of increasing up to 25% on a number of European countries due to the situation around Greenland.
