The main loss in case of early closure of a bank deposit is associated with the almost complete zeroing of accrued interest. In most Russian banks, upon early termination of the contract, income is recalculated at the demand rate — on average 0.01–0.1% per annum. This was stated to Izvestia on January 19 by Fyodor Sidorov, a private investor and founder of the School of Practical Investment.

"In practice, this means that the depositor receives only the invested amount. For example, if a person has placed 500 thousand rubles for a year at 15%, then with an early withdrawal after 10 months, he will receive only about 500 rubles of income instead of 75 thousand rubles," the expert explained.

He noted that under the current macroeconomic conditions, early closure of the deposit can lead to real losses. According to him, the average maximum deposit rate in the largest banks is now about 15.28% per annum with the Central Bank's key rate at 16%. This is significantly higher than inflation, which amounted to 5.59% by the end of 2025, which provides depositors with a real return in the range of 9-10% per annum.

"If you keep the money on deposit until the end of the term, the real yield turns out to be very attractive — about 9-10% per annum above inflation. Early closure actually turns this profit into a loss, since during the placement of money, inflation eats up their purchasing power, and the depositor does not receive a compensating income," the source said.

The expert also drew attention to the acceleration of inflation in early 2026. According to him, in the first 12 days of January, prices increased by 1.26% against the background of an increase in VAT from 20% to 22%, which makes bank deposits an even more important tool for saving money.

If you need access to money, Sidorov recommends choosing products in advance with the option of partial withdrawal or preferential early termination. He clarified that such deposits usually offer a rate 0.5–1 percentage point lower, but this difference is justified by the opportunity to save part of the income and financial flexibility.

Ruslan Spinka, Director of Sales and Customer Service at Fontvielle IC, announced on January 7 that Russians could consider a savings account as a replacement for bank deposits, which allows them to withdraw funds at any time. They are available with almost any amount, whereas deposits often have an entry threshold. For owners of small amounts, he recommended paying attention to short–term deposits for one to two months, which are sometimes offered as part of marketing campaigns and can provide income above expectations.
