In Syria, a new agreement has been signed on an immediate ceasefire between the government and the Kurdish militia. This was reported on January 18 by the Syrian SANA news agency.

"A complete and immediate cease—fire on all fronts and lines of contact," reads an excerpt from the document.

The agreement includes specific military-territorial conditions. The Kurdish forces are to withdraw to the eastern bank of the Euphrates River as part of their redeployment plan.

Oil and gas fields and border posts in the northeast of the country will also come under the control of the central authorities. In addition, SDF members will have the opportunity to join the ranks of the Syrian army and other security forces with guarantees of protection of Kurdish areas.

Earlier in the day, Syrian troops fighting against US-backed Kurdish forces captured the country's largest Omar oil field and Konoko gas field in the eastern province of Deir Zor. The Syrian government explained that the oil wealth, which was controlled by the militias to maintain their self-governing region, deprived the state of basic necessary resources.

As sources in The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported on January 16, Washington threatened Damascus with the return of anti-Syrian sanctions in response to the escalation in the semi-autonomous Kurdish region located in the northeast of the Syrian Arab Republic (SAR).

The SANA news agency indicated on the same day that al-Sharaa had signed a decree on the inviolability of the privacy of the representatives of the Kurdish people living in his country. It was clarified that this gesture was a call to this ethnic group to build a common future.
