Syrian troops fighting against US-backed Kurdish forces have captured the country's largest Omar oil field and Konoko gas field in the eastern province of Deir Zor. This was reported on January 18 by the Reuters news agency.

"The seizure of oil fields located east of the Euphrates River, the main source of income for the Kurdish forces, was a serious blow to the group," the agency said.

The Syrian government explained that the oil wealth, which was controlled by the militias to maintain their self-governing region, deprived the state of basic necessary resources.

Last week, Syrian President Ahmed al-Shara called the situation unacceptable when the militia controls a quarter of the country.

The Syrian army has been advancing into the predominantly Arabic-speaking areas of northeastern Syria controlled by the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), despite US calls to halt its offensive.

As sources in The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported on January 16, Washington threatened Damascus with the return of anti-Syrian sanctions in response to the escalation in the semi-autonomous Kurdish region located in the northeast of the Syrian Arab Republic (SAR).

The SANA news agency indicated on the same day that al-Sharaa had signed a decree on the inviolability of the privacy of the representatives of the Kurdish people living in his country. It was clarified that this gesture was a call to this ethnic group to build a common future.
