Russia will host the Geography Olympiad for BRICS students for the first time.
The Russian Geographical Society (RGS) will host the International Geography Olympiad for BRICS schoolchildren in Russia for the first time in the summer of 2026. This was announced on January 18 by Ilya Gurov, First Deputy Executive Director of the Russian Geographical Society.
"The Olympics will be held in the summer of 2026. We are conducting it during this period because a field stage is needed," Gurov told TASS.
All BRICS member countries will participate in the competition.: Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Indonesia and the UAE. Invitations will also be sent to Sri Lanka, Kazakhstan, Bangladesh, Belarus and Saudi Arabia. The Olympiad will be held in two stages — field and desk, where participants will solve problems in the forestry industry, mining of rare metals, and study the development of cities and transport routes.
"The terrain should be diverse, with landscapes of different types — mountainous regions or large river valleys. The Siberian territories are also being considered," the representative of the Russian Geographical Society clarified.
The Olympiad will be an alternative to the International Geography Olympiad (iGeo), from which Russian schoolchildren were banned after the imposition of sanctions. The Russian geography team is traditionally among the strongest in the world, regularly winning gold and silver medals.
On November 30, Russian schoolchildren won six medals at the Chinese National Mathematics Olympiad, which was held in Taiyuan. Fyodor Petrov, Professor at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at St. Petersburg State University, became the head of the Russian national team. All the team members had previously become winners and prize-winners of the All-Russian School Olympiad.
